Young Thug ends Slime Season series on a disappointing note
Young Thug released his new album “Slime Season 3”, a gritty vulgar rap album about girls, drugs and money.
The new release is the follow-up to last September's “Slime Season” album and November's “Slime Season 2”.
The project includes "Digits," which premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show on Apple music, and "Problem," which premiered on Ebro Darden's Beats 1 show on Apple music. It's also got "With Them," which Kanye West premiered at his Yeezy Season. This will be the last installment to the Slime Season series.
"With Them" starts the album off. It is a bouncy, Mike WiLL Made It-produced banger and the most fun had on the effort. Young Thug sticks to his regular vulgar yet funny lyrics with this song as he says "I want to f*** her but she play more games than the NBA.”
“Memo” might be the standout track of the album. An energized showcase of Thug’s mastery of cadence with London On Da Track, “Memo” keeps listeners on their toes as the beat rides out. "Digits" is another highlight on the album, a melodic ode to spending money that will most likely make significant noise as a single. “If I wanna see some t******, I’ll eat at Hooters," Were the most memorable lyrics off this track, as Thug is known for his absurd lyrics.
Previous releases from Young thug have been packed with unpredictability, “Slime Season 3” sacrifices what makes Thug so intriguing for something much more accessible. Young Thug's catalog is seen with dynamic moments and this project seems to forgo such progressiveness. Young Thug shows us his hopeless romantic side with the track "Worth It," while "With Them" is there to provide the witty one-liners for his loyal listeners.
Other notable moments on the eight-track album include songs “Tattoos” and “Slime S***” where listeners can hear the differences in producers on each track as they compete with each other. Many might be drawn to the album’s opening run, the best three-song run on the project is courtesy of the London on da Track powerhouse (“Digits,” “Worth It,” “Tattoos”), with the soulful sound of “Tattoos” being one of the most underrated song on the album. Mike WiLL Made-It and Allen Ritter provide “Slime Season 3” with the unhinged bounce of “With Them” and “Drippin.”
In comparison to Young Thug’s most recent album, “I’m Up,” “Slime Season 3” provides a more stable known sound for listeners that already know his sound as listeners can hear the transition from mixtape rap artist to mainstream artist through the lyrics and predictability of the album.
If you don't like Young Thug, this album isn't for you but it’s more so an album to solidify his sound.
